Wei Fan, Director Global Ceramics Technology, Momentive Technologies

 

 

 

Please could you give us an overview of your role as Director of Global Ceramics Technology at Momentive Technologies?

As the head of the Ceramics Technology Department, I am overseeing the R&D activities in our US and Japan facilities.  Our R&D organization focuses on delivering the necessary ceramic powder and coating technologies to secure Momentive Technologies’ leadership position and to support the growth of the Ceramics business.  Part of my responsibilities is to align our technology roadmap with the industry mega trends.  Silicon Carbide (SiC) power electronics is one of the markets we identified as a key target.

 

You will be speaking on a panel about the use of silicon carbide (SiC) in power electronics- what is the benefit of using the material for this application?

SiC is one of the wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors.   Compared to the traditional Silicon (Si) based devices (such as IGBT), SiC power devices can operate at higher voltage, higher frequency, and higher temperature with lower losses.  In translation, SiC inverters and converters can handle higher power, generate less waste heat, and occupy less space.  All of these benefits are very attractive to applications such as electric vehicles, high speed trains, smart grids, and renewable energy.

 

How do you think that the increasing interest in SiC will impact the ceramics market?

Many steps are involved in producing SiC power electronics - SiC crystal growth, epitaxial deposition, device fabrication, and electronics packaging.  Each step presents new challenges that require materials with high thermal stability, high chemical resistance, high hardness, or high thermal conductivity.  All of these could open new opportunities for more advanced ceramics.  Being aware of the SiC power electronics industry needs will prepare our ceramics community to ride this tidal wave.

 

What are you most looking forward to at the event?

Meeting ceramics industry experts, learning about new technologies and products, and bringing the awareness of the SiC power electronics boom to the ceramics community.

 

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what one item would you take?

A solar-powered electric dune buggy.  I could enjoy the unlimited range of a silent and relaxing ride on the sandy beach – all made possible by SiC power electronics!
