Innovnano’s YSZ Powder Used to Develop a New Material That Combines Zirconia’s Hardness With Titanium’s Malleability

Nanostructured yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) from Innovnano is optimized for high-strength, anti-wear applications. With small grain sizes and exceptional homogeneity, Innovnano’s YSZ has excellent mechanical and physical properties. Components produced following hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of 3YSZ from Innovnano are exceptionally hard (~ 1,350 HV10), with a fracture toughness of ~ 6MPa.m0.5 and a bending strength of up to 1,800MPa. As well as direct applications across an array of industries for anti-wear applications, Innovnano’s YSZ powder is being used for the development of innovative composite materials.

Z3DLAB, a French startup that specializes in metal additive manufacturing, has developed a new composite using Innovnano’s YSZ powder. This composite material – ZTi-Powder – combines the attractive properties of zirconia with the beneficial characteristics of titanium, exploiting the benefits of both materials to provide unique properties.

Both titanium and zirconia are widely used for high-performance parts. On its own, titanium offers a high level of toughness but has poor abrasion resistance; zirconia is highly resistant to wear and abrasion. The introduction of Innovnano’s YSZ to titanium for the production of ZTi powder provides a material that is hard, tough and wear resistant. The powder is 50% stronger than titanium, can withstand temperatures of over 1,000°C and is also extremely light. It therefore offers sought-after properties for applications across a range of industries, including aerospace, automotive and energy.
