AeroDef Manufacturing 2018: How real is your mixed reality?
SME’s AeroDef Manufacturing event will bring together the leading companies and executives from aerospace and defense manufacturing to explore current technologies and coming trends.
Taking place on March 26-29 at the Long Beach Convention Center, this annual technical conference and exhibition offers not only an up-close look at solutions for aerospace and defense, but also provides compelling presentations and unique content synonymous with and available only at AeroDef.
Manufacturing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the aerospace and defense industry. On March 27, Michael Grieves, PhD, executive director at the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Innovative Design, Florida Institute of Technology, will moderate a discussion on the latest AI thinking, what the state of AI technology currently is, and how it is progressing. The panel will focus on the application of AI to aerospace and defense, both in the products themselves and in the manufacturing equipment and methods to produce those products.
Immerse Yourself in Mixed Reality
Mixed reality (MR), sometimes referred to as hybrid reality, is the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations where physical and digital objects coexist and interact in real time. AeroDef is showcasing MR technologies this year in multiple ways. On Tuesday, March 28, attendees are encouraged to attend the Mixed Reality in Manufacturing panel discussion to learn how leading companies are applying the technologies throughout the supply chain.
Attendees will also have the chance to be a part of live, participative demonstrations of augmented and virtual reality technologies in the Mixed Reality Solution Center. Starting from design engineering all the way through maintenance and repair, participants can test capabilities and see first-hand the benefits of these technologies. Learn how to take a 3D CAD model and develop a set of simple rules that are used to create assembly instructions, potentially reducing or eliminating the need to make drawings. Highly detailed instructions can be made in a few seconds; attendees will see the entire process and capabilities and will be able to discuss the benefits of these technologies.
Research and advancements from the next generation of manufacturers will be on display during the second annual AeroDef Poster Challenge. Posters will be on display Tuesday, March 27, and Wednesday, March 28. This poster session showcases the next generation of manufacturing researchers, engineers, and industry professionals in multiple categories, such as additive manufacturing/3D printing, composites and advanced materials, Industrial IoT, cybersecurity, automation, assembly and robotics, and manufacturing engineering and engineering technology. The runners-up and winning poster will be announced at 08:00 on Wednesday, March 28.
