Keysight Technologies Introduces Nano Indenter G200 High-Accuracy Laser Heater System
Keysight Technologies recently announced the official release of a high-accuracy tip and sample heater to expand the capabilities of its popular Nano Indenter G200. This easy-to-use solution applies a precise high-power diode laser to heat the sample and the indenter tip, which gives scientists and engineers many intriguing new approaches for dynamic materials testing.
Key features of the G200 laser heater system
The Nano Indenter G200 is the world’s most flexible and user-friendly instrument for nanoscale mechanical testing. It is now powered by a laser heater system to provide very precise and stable testing conditions for elevated nanoindentation. To ensure reliable data, the system minimizes drift associated with heating by using a heated tip and the laser as a heating source. Advantages include the capability to measure various nanomechanical properties, e.g. hardness and modulus at precisely controlled temperatures up to 500°C (with 0.1°C accuracy) and to test a wide range of samples under highly dynamic temperature conditions.
Keysight’s laser-heated indenter tip, a critical component of the new system solution, prevents disturbance of the substrate temperature during measurement. This stability is critical for working with materials that have poor thermal conductivity and whose mechanical properties are strongly affected by temperature. Keeping the tip and sample at the same temperature allows G200 users to perform high-temperature continuous stiffness measurements (CSM) with exceptional precision. Ultra-fast heating/cooling at ~20-25°C/sec is also achievable with precise control on heating and cooling rates. Furthermore, the new XP indenter head is uniquely designed for high-temperature, long-term usage, and sapphire and boron nitride tips are available for reactive testing conditions.
Benefits for technical measurements
In addition to elevated hardness and modulus measurements, scratch and wear tests can be performed on various materials under operationally relevant conditions. Understanding nanoscale fundamental deformation mechanisms in time or displacement-rate measurements – i.e. creep and super plasticity and rapid thermomechanical cycling with high accuracy – becomes possible. Thermal activation phenomena such as phase transformation and brittle to ductile fracture transitions can also be studied, as well as elevated fracture toughness measurements, for example, on multilayer metallic/ceramic thin films. The G200 laser heater system is fully integrated with NanoSuite software to adopt various prevailing test methods, including dynamic measurements enabled by CSM option. The system also gives users the option to purge samples with various gases to avoid contamination and oxidation.
