USA Leads the Way in Ceramic Matrix Composites
A new report from Stratview Research confirms the USA’s preeminent position in the local market for ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) and predicts a healthy future for the sector. The ‘Global Ceramic Matrix Composites’ report studies this market over the period 2017 to 2022. It says that the CMCs market is projected to witness an excellent CAGR of 9.1% over the next five years, as a result of increasing demand for advanced lightweight materials in the aerospace, defense and automotive industries – driven by the desire to enhance fuel efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and increase the production rates of key aircraft programs, alongside the development of new CMC applications.
Carbon fiber reinforced carbon (C/C) is expected to remain a dominant product type in the market over the next five years, due to its excellent properties, such as high temperature resistance, low coefficient of thermal expansion, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and hardness. C/C is preferred for a number of applications, such as brakes, nose cone and wing leading edges.
Silicon carbide fiber reinforced silicon carbide (SiC/SiC) is projected to witness the highest growth for the same period, driven by development of new applications in aircraft engines, such as low-pressure turbine blades and turbine shrouds.
Although other user industries are cited – such as transportation, energy, electrical and electronic – the report says that aerospace and defense dominates the global CMC market and is expected to remain the largest segment over the next five years. It says that some of the major drivers contributing to a healthy demand for CMCs include increasing use of C/C brakes to replace conventional steel brakes; development of new applications; increasing penetration of CMCs in commercial and military aircraft engines; and increasing production rates of key commercial aircraft programs to meet huge order backlogs.
North America is expected to remain the largest region in the global CMC market during the forecast period. High aircraft engine production and manufacturing capital in aerospace and defense, with the presence of several small-to-large players, are major growth drivers of the CMC market in North America. The USA alone accounts for more than 90% of the North American CMC market and is projected to remain the growth engine of the region.
Key players in the industry, cited in this report, are some of the leading exhibitors at Ceramics Expo and also presenters at Conference @ Ceramics Expo. One of the important sessions for all delegates involved in the production and use of these technical ceramics will take place at 1pm on Tuesday April 25 – ‘Developing Industry Standards for CMCs: 2,700°F Gas Turbines, Accident-Tolerant Fuels and Solar Applications’.
